Again,曾慧 manages to mesmerise with her graceful body lanaguage and 兰花指, and she manages to portray the 娇 and confidence of Yang GuiFei. I do not like her head gear though for it seems more suitable for roles like Empress Wu Zhe Tian. 

But the one who stole the show was 黄伟坤. Cutting a slim figure, he looks very dashing. And the voice is loud, clear and chokeful of emotions. That is the difference between him and the likes of 丁凡and 梁耀安 whose singing styles lack pathos and hardly convey the emotions of the character. Whatever it is, his voice is nice and endearing though it still sounds stretched when hitting the high notes. For want of a better word, I think his voice is sweet. And he often immerses himself into the role.

This is a play which premeried in 1995 starring 郭凤女 and 梁耀安 who were then with 广州粤剧团. It seemed to have been popularised by 广州红豆粤剧团 with 郭凤女 and 欧凯明.

Now 曾慧 plays the female lead. I must say she is at her stellar best. After her performance a few years back with a few of the renowned male artistes, I really detested her. It was really a case of her 'biting more than she could chew' as she had a hard time memorising all the lines and lyrics. If you cannot even remember your lines, how could you put up a convincing performance?

Now a principal actress with the troupe, I must say she and 欧凯明 are more compatible on stage than he with 梁淑卿. For one, both can 'fight'-打北派. So this play is a showcase of their singing style and acrobatic skills.

Both did well. 欧 has a thundering voice, and he manages to portray the role well, showing the conflicted emotions of whether to acknowledge his wife in the face of threat to expose her identity. I do not remember 梁耀安 showing such depth when he played the same role. He was stiff, and superficial in his portrayal at best. 曾's voice is sweet (芳腔), though her high notes are not as seamless as 郭凤女.
